How to Choose Your Vet Gloves

There are many different types of gloves that can be used for the different tasks listed above. In fact there are so many options that you can use different types for the different tasks. Lets review the types of gloves suitable for Veterinary Clinics.

Medical Exam Gloves

Exam-grade gloves are designed to protect vets and vet techs from contaminants and pathogens that can be found in bodily fluids like blood and saliva. while many of these pathogens don't affect humans it's important to wear glove protection to prevent cross contamination and spread to other animals. To help ensure the safety of yourself, the animals and those around you make sure you're using gloves that are labeled as "Medical Grade" or "Exam Grade" for these higher risk tasks.

Industrial Gloves

Since medical exam gloves tend to be more expensive, this is where Industrial grade gloves come in. Not all tasks in a vet clinic will bring you in contact with dangerous fluids - many tasks like disinfecting, cleaning, nail clipping and grooming are quite safe and suitable for industrial gloves. Using different types of gloves for different roles also makes it easy for the other staff at the clinic to know what each other are working on at a quick glance, which adds an extra layer of awareness and protection within the office.

How to Choose Your Glove Material

We mainly recommend three different materials for disposable gloves for animal care and cleaning. Vinyl, Latex and Nitrile gloves all come in both exam grade options and industrial grade options. But how do you choose the right material for the task? Let's take a deeper look at these three options.

Vinyl Gloves

Vinyl gloves are the most cost effective option we have for vet clinics. Vinyl disposable gloves come in both industrial and medical grades. Vinyl can hold up quite well to most common household chemicals and detergents, but if you're using any harsh chemicals we recommend checking our chemical resistance chart - latex or nitrile gloves are probably a better option. Vinyl gloves provide a snug fit, but due to the material they don't offer a lot of stretch. For this reason they should be used for light to medium duty tasks - if you put pressure or pull on vinyl gloves they will rip rather than stretch.

Latex Gloves

Latex gloves have long been a staple in veterinary clinics, because of their flexibility and comfort. Latex gloves have the most stretch out of the three options, making them quick to put on and comfortable for extended use. Latex tend to be the go-to for procedures and exams. It may seem obvious because it's in the name, but latex gloves contain latex which is a common allergy. Pets and humans alike can have allergies and sensitivity to latex causing them to break out in a rash or worse. Because of this if Latex is your glove of choice we highly recommend also having vinyl or nitrile gloves on hand in case a staff member or furry friend have this common allergy. Latex holds up quite well to many harsh chemicals, but as always make sure you refer to the chemical resistance chart linked above to be sure.

Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile gloves are the undisputed champion for chemical resistance, durability and versatility. In a busy multifaceted environment like a veterinary clinic they're a great choice. Nitrile gloves are particularly well-suited for intricate medical procedures, dental work, and wound care. The material's excellent chemical resistance makes nitrile gloves a good fit for handling vaccines, bio samples and disinfectants without compromising the integrity of the glove or risking the safety of the user. Their snug fit and tactile sensitivity allow for precise movements, ensuring that veterinary professionals can perform delicate tasks with confidence.

Gloves are Pawsitively Essential

In the intricate dance of veterinary care, disposable gloves emerge as unsung heroes, safeguarding the health of both dedicated professionals and their beloved animal patients. Beyond protection, the right choice of gloves enhances the efficiency and precision required in veterinary tasks, fostering a seamless and compassionate experience. Whether it's the reliable resilience of nitrile or the versatility of vinyl, the careful selection of disposable gloves aligns with a commitment to the highest standards of hygiene and safety in the veterinary clinic.
